Mascot Heroes

A 2D puzzle mobile based platformer. The player must swap between 5 different characters to progress.

Overview

Mascot Heroes is a mobile based puzzle platformer based on a children's book of the same name. It features 5 playable characters, themed after the different branches of the US military. Each character features abilities themed around their respective branch. To succeed, the player will have to swap between each respective character to overcome obstacles.

My Role

During my time on Mascot Heroes I worked as the teams lead designer. My biggest undertaking in this role has been the creation of the GDD. A small sample of this GDD can be seen by clicking here.

I have also been acting as the projects lead sound engineer. Creating numerous sound effects and composing level melodies is always a good time in my eyes.

Mentor

One of our other designers was actually new to the role, since he was primarily a robotics student. Because of this I had to take on a role of mentor-ship. Through the games production I taught him the various goals and tasks of a designer. This included paper mapping, documentation, and balancing. I even demonstrated the process of creating sound effects from the ground up.

Teaching someone the production process actually caused me to learn a lot. Having someone with less experience allowed me to understand the game from a perspective that was similar to a consumer. Working with him taught me the importance of the smaller details. Being able to see a game from numerous perspectives is an essential skill for a designer, no matter the projects scope.

Paper Map

The following is a basic paper map created for one of the introductory levels. This level shows off the abilities of Chesty, the bulldog character. Because of this, the level features numerous NPCs that the player must bark at to activate. This level shows off the different types of NPC interactions that can occur.
